
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine who was a laboratory technician and John Ormond, a stockbroker. Ormond is the 2nd child of five children for her parents. At first, she attended Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her early lead performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a single year at arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, where she graduated in 1988. Ormond made her debut appearance on British TV's 1989 show Traffik. It focused on illicit heroin trade between the far East as well as the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin addict daughter of the main character a Home Office minister who was involved in battling heroin imports. This early role won glowing reviews.
